Total Ankle Replacement in Boise
Total ankle replacement, also known as ankle arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure used for patients suffering from ankle arthritis. The purpose is to reduce your pain and improve your activity level.
This procedure is typically performed after more non-invasive procedures have been exhausted such as injection therapy and physical therapy.
Arthritis of the ankle can be caused by several conditions, however the most common cause for severe ankle arthritis is due to degeneration of the joint following an injury or repeated injuries. Less commonly arthritis is due to wear and tear arthritis or autoimmune arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis means inflammation of the joint. In these conditions, the cartilage covering at the joint becomes damaged leading to bone on bone wear at the joint.
Dr. Flint may recommend total ankle replacement after reviewing your medical history and completing a thorough physical examination. Dr. Flint’s team relies on the latest medical imaging to complete the examination prior to making any surgical recommendations.
Patients that are typically good candidates for total ankle replacements include:
- Those suffering from severe posttraumatic, osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis of the ankle
- Anyone that does not have significant weight and activity demand on the ankle joint
- Patients who may have been recommended for ankle fusion surgery but do not want to lose ankle mobility
- Those without a severe deformity of the ankle joint
Should you be a candidate to undergo a total ankle replacement, you will likely spend a few days in the hospital after your surgery. You can expect to keep the weight off of your foot for six weeks following surgery. Your sutures and cast are typically removed at the third week after surgery. Patients generally start physical therapy at week six.
